How Indian PIN Codes Work

Understanding the 6-digit PIN code structure helps you verify addresses and spot errors before shipping.

1

First Digit: Region

India is divided into 9 PIN regions. For example, 1 = Delhi/Haryana, 4 = Maharashtra, 6 = Tamil Nadu/Kerala.

2

First Two Digits: Sub-region

The first two digits narrow it to a postal circle or sub-region within the state.

3

First Three Digits: District

Together, the first three digits identify the sorting district that handles mail for the area.

4

Last Three Digits: Post Office

The final three digits pinpoint the specific delivery post office.

If the first digit of a PIN code doesn’t match the expected state, the address likely has a typo. Always verify all six digits before booking a courier.

Delivery areas

What Does “Out of Delivery Area” Mean?

Couriers including Trackon may classify certain PIN codes as out-of-delivery-area (ODA).

An ODA classification typically means the location is outside the courier’s standard delivery network. This can result in longer delivery timelines, additional charges, or a requirement to collect the parcel from the nearest branch instead of doorstep delivery.

ODA status can change as courier networks expand or contract. A PIN code that was ODA last year may have standard service today, and vice versa. If timely delivery matters, confirm the current status with Trackon before booking.

Lookup fields

What Information Will You Get?

When a matching record is available, the checker can display these fields. A branch name is not the same as a verified office address.

City

City or locality associated with the PIN code.

State

State shown in the location record.

Branch Name

Associated Trackon branch name, not a street address or phone number.

Important: Does a result confirm delivery availability?

No. A matching location or branch record does not guarantee current pickup, doorstep delivery, delivery time or shipping charges. For these details, confirm directly through Trackon’s official channels.

What If No Record Is Found?

A “No Record Found” result means the checker did not return a matching location record. It does not prove that the PIN code is serviceable or unserviceable.

Recheck all six digits and try again. For confirmation, see our Trackon customer care guide.

PIN Code Lookup vs Parcel Tracking

A PIN code lookup shows location and branch-name information. Parcel tracking is different: it uses an AWB or consignment number to look up shipment updates.

Use our Trackon tracking tool, tracking number guide or courier charges guide as needed.
